Libya has become the next battleground for the West to take control of North African and Middle East natural resources, with US and allied naval power stationed along the Libyan coastline, and Western leaders and the Western media calling for NATO to intervene on humanitarian grounds; what is at stake here is not the lives of the Libyan people as claimed by the media, but one of the world’s largest oil reserves ranked 25 out of the 100 top oil companies in the world by The Energy Intelligence.

No doubt, anyone with a television, radio or internet access could not have escaped the bombardment of mainstream media news stories about the situation in Libya. Libyan leader Colonel Muamar Gaddafi has been portrayed as a blood thirsty dictator, his troops murdering ordinary citizens opposed to his rule. The Western media and Western leaders have called for humanitarian intervention from NATO, claiming that a genocide will take place if nothing is done.

Behind the scenes however, and not reported in the Western media is the real reasons why the US and its allies want to invade Libya under a humanitarian pretext.

The Energy Intelligence, a publishing organisation which specialises in publications on the energy industry, ranks the Libyan National Oil  Corporation (NOC) 25 among the world’s top 100 oil companies.

In the article ‘The Energy Intelligence ranks NOC 25 among the world’s Top 100 companies.’ on the Libyaonline.com website it states that, “The Energy Intelligence Organisation indicated that the Top 100 companies are the most important energy companies in the world and control 87% of world petroleum production, 85% of reserves, 87% of products sales and 74% of refining capacity.” (15 February 2011)

It also said that NOC is playing a prominent role in the international petroleum industry.

According to Professor Michel Chossudovsky, ‘Insurrection and Military Intervention: The US-NATO Attempted Coup d’Etat in Libya?’, “Libya is among the World’s largest oil economies with approximately 3.5% of global oil reserves, more than twice those of the US.” (Global Research: March 7, 2011)

More importantly, Keith Harmon Snow in his article, ‘Petroleum and Empire in North Africa. NATO Invasion of Libya Underway’, said that Colonel Muamar Gaddafi overthrew the Western puppet regime in 1969 when he took power, and in doing so he nationalised Libya’s oil industry, which meant that Western countries no longer had access to the huge oil reserves which was found in 1959. (Global Research: March 2, 2011)

This is the real reason why the US and its allies want to invade Libya, to restore Western control of Libya’s oil. There is no humanitarian concern for the Libyan people.

Libyan opposition linked to the West

Just as with Egypt and Tunisia, some of the Libyan opposition groups are linked to Western countries. According to Snow the National Front for the Salvation of Libya (NFSL) is funded by Britain, and even held a conference in Britain in 2005. The NFSL was formed by Colonel Jaafar Nimieri, who according to Snow was known to be a CIA operative. Snow said that the NFSL held its national congress in the United States, in 2007.

Snow said France, Italy, Britain and Israel are also backing the so called opposition groups hoping to strike a deal with these groups for the oil.

Snow even goes on to mention how the media sources in Libya providing the Western media with their stories are also funded by America. There is simply nothing on the mainstream news that can be trusted regarding Libya.

Contrary to mainstream media reports the British SAS team who were arrested in Libya were not in the country on a ‘diplomatic mission’. They were there to aid the military actions of the opposition.

It is important to note the difference between the genuine rebels in Libya who oppose any Western interference in their country and the rebels backed by the West who are calling for intervention.

It is not known how this conflict will turn out, but it is important that people recognise the hidden hands of Western colonialism continuing to shape world events to this day

Will the the rest of the world fall for another ‘humanitarian intervention’ cry from the West? We shall see.
